I do not have a car and I live in the city centre. My kids have recently learned to ride their bikes and during the school holidays we discovered the wonderful cycle road at the embankment. We however cannot get there on public transport due to the rule on the tram. I can take a suitcase and a pushchair but my kids small bikes on a non busy midday tram I cannot for some reason. It seems sometimes like public transport is designed not for the masses and is losing money because it doesn’t encourage those who actually want to use it. I can take a bike on a train and I wouldn’t be using it in rush hour.

Hi Holly
Thank you for your feedback.
I'm really sorry, we don't accept bikes on the trams and there is no immediate plans for changing this rule. I understand that most trains and some tram systems allow bikes, but the design of each tram and train are very different and this will dictate what you can or can't accept. Some trams have luggage spaces for suitcases, and some allow bikes to be parked in certain bays, or across doorways when they are not in use.
Our trams simply don't have enough space to ensure the safety of all of our passengers and that is the reason we can't accept any bikes. It would not be safe for others in the tram, for example, if the tram were to suddenly stop. A bike would likely injure someone if it were to fall.
I understand your children's bikes may be much smaller than adult bikes, but allowing some and not others would be difficult to police and it would be hard to establish where we draw the line.
I'll take on board your suggestion to allow bikes at certain times, but as it stands, the trams are regularly very busy throughout the day and it would be very difficult to accept any bikes, regardless of the size.
